Joseph Pilates developed Contrology, which is now known as ‘Pilates,’. The term Pilates was coined later. Joseph opened his first studio in New York in 1923 with his wife and assistant, Clara. Pilates became an instant success, especially among dancers, who found practicing it an excellent way to recover from and prevent further injuries.

Gradually the popularity of Pilates grew, and it is today, with its hundreds of variations and modifications, still one of the most popular forms of mental and physical conditioning.

Pilates is a form of exercise where the focus lies on the balanced development of the body and the strengthening its core – mainly the internal muscles of the back and abdomen. Pilates exercises help develop overall good posture, strength, flexibility, balance and coordination.

Pilates does, however, not only involve the strengthening of the body, but also the mind. A Pilates workout reduces stress and anxiety while at the same time improving focus, concentration, emotional stability, memory and sleep patterns. It achieves this by demanding concentration, expending energy and creating an awareness of the body, all of which enables an individual to reach a sound state of body and mind.

Maureen Boddy is a qualified Pilates instructor with years of experience in the field.

The way Maureen first became interested in Pilates makes for a rather compelling story. Maureen had suffered with her back for many years after falling from a horse. After observing her mother’s discomfort and pain, her daughter, a qualified Pilates instructor in the United Kingdom, suggested that Maureen try Pilates exercises as a way to manage her pain and recover from her injury.

After seeing a local Pilates instructor for several months with great success, Maureen decided that she herself wanted to study Pilates. She went on to study a combination of Pilates, anatomy and physiology, which gave her a unique understanding of the human body and its movements.

A number of years after she had started with Pilates, Maureen suffered another tragic injury by way of falling down a flight of stairs. Physiotherapy was not working, and after a MRI and a series of x-rays, a neurosurgeon advised her to have an operation. Maureen decided against the operation, rather opting to use Pilates to help her recover from her injury, and to this day she is healthy and pain free.*

During the process of recovering from her second injury, Maureen decided that she wanted more from Pilates and started a home study of Isometrics and Dynamic tension (ID). The basic concept of ID exercises involves flexing various muscles against each other to achieve a muscle workout without the use of weights. When using ID, muscles are contracted without any necessary movement of the involved body parts, making it perfect for use in combination with Pilates. After trying it for herself, she found that her body had become more toned and firmer than ever before.

Seeing the miraculous transformation in herself, Maureen endeavoured to combine Pilates remaining faithful to Contrology, and ID, and the results were phenomenal. She now teaches this combination of Pilates and ID, which she calls Youthing Boddy Pilates.

Her students include individuals in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, and she offers Pilates classes for all, be it Pilates for beginners, or advanced Pilates. For first time students, she does a private full physical assessment which lasts approximately an hour and a quarter before their first class. During this time the client will first be asked to fill out a form to gather some important information such as medication use, previous injuries, etc. Maureen will then do a physical assessment, looking at the client’s physical ability and possible postural problems. She will also teach the client all the basic principles and positions of Pilates, while at the same time going through all the terminology she will be using during the class.

Maureen’s studio is very spacious and safe parking is provided on the premises. Because the studio is carpeted, students are asked to wear either socks or ballet shoes at all times. There is always an assistant teacher in the class who takes over when Maureen needs to help a client, so no one is ever neglected, and the class continues on smoothly.

If you would like to condition both your body and mind, Youthing Boddy Pilates is the answer you have been looking for. Whether you want to recover from an injury, drop a dress size, or simply keep in shape, it offers a solution for everyone, both young and old.

*Please note that Maureen advises anyone with an injury to first seek medical help and to always heed the advice of medical professionals.
